Both clay and brass diyas are fitting for a Choti Diwali home. Clay provides a natural, earthy feel, while brass may hold the warmth of generations of family use. The appropriate choice depends on the household's ritual practice, the condition of the lamp and where it will be placed.

Compare use rather than status

A small clay diya is simple to gather in multiples. A brass lamp might be practical for a dedicated prayer area. The material does not affect the sincerity of the offering, and a heavy lamp is not necessarily stable on an inappropriate surface.

Check each lamp first

Use intact lamps free from cracks, significant damage, or loose components. Commercial clay diyas are typically fired; do not rely on an unfired homemade container to hold oil securely. Always position each oil lamp on a heat-resistant tray to safeguard the surface beneath.

Follow household requirements precisely

A certain ritual might require a designated lamp or wick setup. Inquire about that particular practice instead of assuming a general rule that brass is prohibited or clay should be thrown away after a single use.

Plan reuse and clean-up

Let lamps cool fully before touching or cleaning them. Keep functional lamps safely for use in the next festival. The environmental impact of a choice depends in part on how it is produced, utilized, and reused, rather than solely on whether it is called traditional.
