At a glance
- Check the ritual and existing supplies before shopping.
- Assign clear preparation and supervision roles.
- Review what was actually used to simplify next year.
Confirm the plan before buying materials
First decide which observance you are preparing for. A Lakshmi-Ganesha puja at home, a shop’s Chopda Puja and a visit to a community Kali Puja will not use one interchangeable list. Ask the person leading the worship what they need, which prayers will be used and whether anything requires advance preparation.
Check the calendar for the place where the puja will happen. If relatives are joining remotely, share both the local time and their corresponding timezone. Keep the devotional time separate from the arrival time, food serving and family photographs, so a late guest does not inadvertently interrupt the beginning.
A practical samagri inventory
The table below is a starting inventory for a simple home puja. Mark what is already available, what your tradition uses and what can be omitted. It is more useful to check a small list carefully than to buy an oversized kit containing unfamiliar items.
| Group | Check at home | Before you add it |
|---|---|---|
| Prayer space | Stable surface, clean cloth, family images or murtis | Check height, stability and comfortable access. |
| Light | Diya, suitable holder, customary oil or ghee, wicks | Choose an arrangement that can remain supervised. |
| Offerings | Flowers, fruit, sweets and water | Confirm the household’s custom and quantities. |
| Ritual accessories | Thali, small bowls, roli or kumkum, rice, bell | Use only what the leader expects to use. |
| Optional additions | Incense, coins, account books or other family items | Keep smoke, paper and flames safely separated. |
| Prayer support | Text, song sheet or a familiar recording | Check legibility, pronunciation help and sound level. |
| After worship | Serving bowls, clean spoons, food containers | Prepare for sharing and storing prasad. |

Several days ahead: remove avoidable work
Look through the cupboard before visiting a shop. Wash reusable trays and bowls, check the condition of the lamps and locate the prayer book. Decide which sweets will be homemade and which will be bought. Confirm the guest count, including children, and ask about food restrictions before choosing an offering everyone is expected to share.
Divide tasks by responsibility rather than assuming the same person will clean, cook, decorate and lead prayer. One person can organise the room, another collect offerings, and another arrange seating and calls. Give each task a clear finish point; “prepare the thali” is more helpful than “help with everything.”
The day before: arrange the room
Do a trial layout with the lamps unlit. Can the leader reach the flowers and water without leaning across a flame? Can people enter and leave without stepping over electrical cables? Is there a place for shoes, bags and gifts outside the prayer area? A quick rehearsal often reveals a practical issue that a shopping list misses.
In an apartment, a small stable table may work better than an elaborate floor arrangement. Keep access routes clear and make sure a chair can be used without leaving its occupant at the edge of the gathering. Decorations should support the space rather than cover switches, vents or exits.
Just before the puja: the short check
- Set out only the materials that will be used, with spare items nearby but out of the way.
- Place food offerings in clean dishes and keep packaging or labels available for ingredient checks.
- Secure loose clothing and keep paper prayer sheets clear of flames.
- Give children a non-flame role, such as arranging flowers or handing out a text.
- Explain the sequence to guests and let them know whether they may photograph it.
- Assign an adult to watch the lamps and another to help anyone who needs to leave the room.
Open-flame care applies even to a short gathering. The U.S. Fire Administration recommends stable holders, space from combustible materials and extinguishing candles when leaving or sleeping. Apply the same care to diya placement. Choose battery lighting where a flame cannot be watched.
A smaller arrangement when time is short
Keep a simplified version ready: the household’s devotional image, a safe light, water, flowers or a modest food offering, and one familiar prayer. Ask the leader which additions can be left out. A delivery delay or a missing decorative item need not become the focus of the evening.
For a first celebration away from family, a brief call beforehand can answer the questions that generic lists cannot: which song your relatives sing, how they prepare the offering and what they do at the close. Write those details beside the checklist so it gradually becomes a record of your own practice.
Afterward: finish the practical care
Check and extinguish lamps before moving to another room. Share prasad, store perishable food promptly according to its directions and separate reusable objects from waste. Milk-based sweets need particular attention to their ingredients and storage; the FSSAI guidance on traditional milk products explains why their shelf lives differ.
Note what was used and what remained untouched. Next year’s preparation can then be smaller, clearer and easier. For the devotional outline behind this list, see Lakshmi Puja at home.
Frequently asked questions
Is every samagri item in this checklist compulsory?
No. The list helps with preparation, but requirements depend on the ritual and family tradition. Confirm the essentials with the person leading the puja.
What should I prepare first?
Confirm the observance, location-specific timing and person leading it. Then check materials already at home before shopping.
How do I organise a puja in a small apartment?
Use a stable compact surface, keep walkways clear and provide comfortable seating. Reduce decoration before compromising access or flame supervision.
What can children help with?
They can arrange flowers, pass out prayer sheets or help serve afterward. Keep flame handling and hot objects with an attentive adult.
