Ayodhya
In Ayodhya, the birthplace of Lord Ram, Ramlila is a grand affair. The city is decorated like a bride and the entire epic of Ramayana is enacted over a period of 10 days. The performances are held in various parts of the city with the main event taking place on the banks of the Sarayu river. The actors are usually local residents. The event culminates with the burning of the effigies of Ravana, symbolizing the victory of good over evil.
Varanasi
Varanasi, also known as Kashi, is another place visited by Lord Ram. The Ramlila of Ramnagar, Varanasi is famous worldwide. It is a 31-day event where the entire city turns into a giant stage for the story of Ramayana to unfold. The Maharaja of Kashi plays a crucial role in the festivities. The event attracts thousands of visitors each year.
Chitrakoot
Chitrakoot is where Lord Ram spent a significant part of his exile. The Ramlila here is performed with great fervor. The performances are usually held in the open air and the entire town participates in the event. The event lasts for 10 days and ends with the burning of the effigies of Ravana.
