Region Diwali Puja Method
North India
In North India, Diwali Puja is primarily dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha. The puja begins by cleaning the house and decorating it with rangoli and diyas. A special altar is set up for the deities, adorned with flowers, sweets, and fruits. The puja starts with the invocation of Lord Ganesha, followed by the worship of Goddess Lakshmi in her five forms - Mahalakshmi, Mahasaraswati, Mahakali, Mahagauri, and Mahavijaya. The puja concludes with the singing of Aarti and distribution of Prasad.
West India (Rajasthan/Gujarat)
In Rajasthan and Gujarat, Diwali Puja is performed after sunset, known as Pradosh Kaal. The puja is dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha. The idols are bathed in panchamrit and adorned with new clothes and jewelry. The puja begins with the lighting of diyas, followed by the offering of sweets, fruits, and flowers. The devotees sing devotional songs and perform aarti. In Gujarat, the New Year is also celebrated the day after Diwali, making the festivities even more special.
South India (Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh)
In South India, Diwali is celebrated as Naraka Chaturdashi, a day before it is celebrated in the rest of India. The day begins with an early morning oil bath, followed by prayers. The puja is dedicated to Lord Krishna, who killed the demon Narakasura on this day. The house is cleaned and decorated with kolam (rangoli) and diyas. Special sweets and snacks are prepared for the occasion. In the evening, crackers are burst to celebrate the victory of good over evil.
East India (Bengal, Manipur)
In Bengal and other parts of East India, Diwali is celebrated as Kali Puja. The puja is performed at midnight. The idol of Goddess Kali is adorned with garlands and red hibiscus flowers. Offerings of sweets, rice, and lentils are made to the Goddess. In Manipur, Diwali is celebrated as Ningol Chakouba, a day when married women visit their parental homes. The day is marked by feasting and gift-giving.
