Karwa Chauth Rituals

Karwa Chauth is a significant festival celebrated by married Hindu women, primarily in North India. It involves a day-long fast for the well-being and longevity of their husbands. Below is a step-by-step guide to the rituals involved in Karwa Chauth:

Step Description
1. Sargi The day begins early, before sunrise, with the consumption of 'Sargi,' a meal prepared by the mother-in-law. This meal includes fruits, sweets, and other nutritious items to sustain the woman throughout the day.
2. Fasting After consuming Sargi, the women begin their fast. They abstain from food and water throughout the day, dedicating their fast to the well-being and longevity of their husbands.
3. Dressing Up In the evening, women dress up in beautiful traditional attire, often wearing red or other bright colors. They adorn themselves with jewelry and apply henna on their hands.
4. Puja Preparation Women gather in a group, usually with friends and family, to prepare for the evening puja (prayer). They arrange a thali (plate) with items like a diya (lamp), sindoor (vermilion), incense sticks, and sweets.
5. Karwa Chauth Katha The women sit together and listen to the Karwa Chauth Katha (story). This story narrates the significance and origin of the festival, reinforcing the importance of the fast and prayers.
6. Evening Puja During the puja, women offer prayers to Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva, seeking blessings for their husbands' well-being. They pass the thali around in a circle while singing traditional songs.
7. Moon Sighting The most awaited part of the day is the moon sighting. Once the moon is visible, women view it through a sieve or a dupatta (scarf) and then look at their husbands through the same sieve.
8. Breaking the Fast After the moon sighting, the husbands offer their wives the first sip of water and a morsel of food, symbolizing the breaking of the fast. This is followed by a family meal.
